Kauthuma Aupāsanam
Kauthuma śākhā aupāsanam (aupasanam) — the daily gṛhya fire offering of rice to Agni, Sūrya and Prajāpati, with sāman gāna.
1. Aupāsana saṅkalpaḥ
Śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ caturbhujam ।
Prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye ॥
Oṃ bhūḥ — Oṃ bhuvaḥ — Oṃ suvaḥ — Oṃ mahaḥ —
Oṃ janaḥ — Oṃ tapaḥ — Oṃ satyam —
Oṃ tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt —
Oṃ āpo jyotī raso'mṛtaṃ brahma bhūrbhuvassuvarom ॥
Make the resolve to offer the previous evening’s aupāsana together with this morning’s, in one sitting.
Mamopātta samasta duritakṣayadvārā śrīparameśvara prītyarthaṃ pūrvedyuḥ sāyamaupāsanena saha adya prātaraupāsanaṃ taṇḍulairhoṣyāmi ॥
2. Pariṣecanam
Deva savitaḥ prasuva yajñaṃ prasuva yajñapatiṃ bhagāya ।
Divyo gandharvaḥ ketapūḥ ketaṃ naḥ punātu ।
Vācaspatirvācaṃ naḥ svadatu ॥
Perform pariṣecanam around the fire, taking in the washed rice (akṣata) that is the homa offering.
3. Arcanam
Offer akṣata at each place named below with its nāma-mantra.

4. Homaḥ
Hoṣyāmi ॥
The performer says "hoṣyāmi".
Juhudhi ॥
Someone present answers "juhudhi". If there is no one else, the performer says it himself.
There are four offerings. Take half of the washed rice kept for the homa, divide it into two parts, and hold one in the left hand and the other in the right. Offer the right-hand portion into the centre of the fire:
Agnaye svāhā ॥
Offer with the fingertips (devatīrtha).
Agnaye idaṃ na mama ॥
Say:
Transfer the rice in the left hand to the right, and offer it in the north-east of the fire over the base of the little finger (ṛṣitīrtha):
Prajāpataye svāhā ॥
Make the offering.
Prajāpataye idaṃ na mama ॥
Say:
Divide the remaining rice into two parts, holding one in the right hand and the other in the left. Offer the right-hand portion:
Sūryāya svāhā ॥
Offer it into the centre of the fire as before.
Sūryāya idaṃ na mama ॥
Say:
Transfer the rice in the left hand to the right, and offer it in the north-east over the base of the little finger as before:
Prajāpataye svāhā ॥
Make the offering.
Prajāpataye idaṃ na mama ॥

5. Uttara pariṣecanam
Deva savitaḥ prāsāvīḥ yajñaṃ prāsāvīḥ yajñapatiṃ bhagāya ।
Divyo gandharvaḥ ketapūḥ ketaṃ naḥ apāvīt ।
Vācaspatirvācaṃ naḥ asvādīt ॥
With this, perform pariṣecanam.
6. Gauṣūkta sāma (evening)
Gauṣūktasya sāmnaḥ gauṣūkta ṛṣiḥ । gāyatrī chandaḥ । indro devatā ।
Sāyamaupāsanahomasidhyarthe jape viniyogaḥ ।

7. Āśvasūkta sāma (morning)
Āśvasūktasya sāmnaḥ āśvasūkta ṛṣiḥ । gāyatrī chandaḥ । indro devatā ।
Prātaraupāsanahomasidhyarthe jape viniyogaḥ ।

8. Vāmadevya sāma — samidādhānam
Then sing the Vāmadevya sāman on the tṛca "kayā naścitra", up to "Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ" (the gāna is on page 32 of the book).
ka¹yā² naści³tra¹ ā bhuva²ʳdū³tī² sa³dā¹vṛ²dhaḥ³ sa¹khā² |
ka²yā³ śa¹ci²ṣṭhayā vṛ³tā² ||
ka¹stvā² sa³tyo¹ madā²ʳnāṃ³ ma¹gͫhi²ṣṭho matsa³da¹ndha²saḥ |

With this, place one samidh in the fire.
9. Namastau sāma
Then sing the sāman "Namastau".

10. Samarpaṇam
Mantrahīnaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ bhaktihīnaṃ hutāśana ।
Yaddhutaṃ tu mayā deva paripūrṇaṃ tadastu te ॥
Prāyaścittānyaśeṣāṇi tapaḥkarmātmakāni vai ।
Yāni teṣāmaśeṣāṇāṃ kṛṣṇānusmaraṇaṃ param ॥
Namaste gārhapatyāya namaste dakṣiṇāgnaye ।
Nama āhavanīyāya mahāvedyai namo namaḥ ॥
Kāṇḍadvayopapādyāya karmabrahmasvarūpiṇe ।
Svargāpavargarūpāya yajñeśāya namo namaḥ ॥
11. Abhivādanam
Bow to the fire and perform abhivādana, reciting your own gotra, pravara, sūtra, śākhā and name.
Abhivādaye ___ trayārṣeya/pañcārṣeya pravarānvita ___ gotraḥ ___ sūtraḥ
kauthumaśākhādhyāyī ___ śarmā nāma ahaṃ asmi bhoḥ ॥
12. Ācamanam
Take a little water in the right palm and sip it three times with the mantras below.
Oṃ acyutāya namaḥ
Oṃ anantāya namaḥ
Oṃ govindāya namaḥ
Wipe the lips twice with water and touch the limbs below with the named finger of the right hand.
